Here are some frequently asked questions that many new band members have from year to year. Hopefully this answers your questions!

How much do we practice during the week?

During the fall, we practice Tuesdays from 6:30 - 9 PM and on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:15 - 6:15 PM. These practices end around Halloween time. Basically the first quarter of school. After that, marching band practices are only occasional, like to get ready for a parade or special event.

Do we have to switch instruments if the one we play isn't in marching band?

Students who play French Horns play Mellophones in the marching band. Our Trombone players play Baritones, and our Tuba players play Sousaphones. Instruments like the Bassoon and Oboe are not used outside for marching band at GBHS, so many students elect to play in the front ensemble or play another instrument like the clarinet or saxophone.

If we don't want to do marching band can we still be in a band class?

Absolutely. Marching band is a commitment for the fall, but you will continue with your regular band class for the rest of the year. If you decide to not participate in marching band the next year, you can still sign up for a band class!

If you sign up for marching band, can you do jazz band?

Definitely! Jazz Band at GBHS starts after the marching season has ended. A large majority of our Jazz students come from the marching band!

Does marching band get in the way of sports?

It depends. School sports that happen in the fall can be tricky, but any winter or spring sports typically don't conflict at all. We've had some students participate in fall sports and marching band but it is very difficult to participate in both.
